Short Bowel Syndrome
Short Bowel Syndrome with Intestinal Failure (SBS-IF) results from extensive intestinal resection due to chronic IBD, acute events (e.g. mesenteric infarction) or congenital abnormalities. It is estimated that between 20,000 and 40,000 people are living with Short Bowel Syndrome in the United States and Europe. Intestinal Failure (IF), a consequence of SBS, occurs when less than 200cm of functional intestine remains, resulting in serious, life-threatening complications.
